Certification for Operation

I am sure this is found in both DCA and MGM towers. It is found on the side of all cabs in each shaft. It’s very interesting to see this certificate in the elevator because it’s signed by the devil himself. There are three references to the twilight zone in this artifact. One is the state id number “10259” which refers to the first air date (10/02/1959) of the twilight zone, which is labeled “where is everyone”. Second reference is that the certification is signed by the devil himself, check synopsis below of the episode references. Lastly, if you look at the date it was last inspected on October 19, 1939 which is only 13 days before lightning struck the tower.

Synopsis
A hypochondriac sells his soul to the devil in exchange for immortality. He uses it to collect insurance money and cheap thrills by hurling himself into life-threatening accidents. Soon growing bored with this game, he confesses to the murder of his wife... hoping to get a ride on the electric chair. His lawyer makes a good case, however, and he is sentenced to life in prison. In the last scene, the devil shows up and reminds the man of an escape clause in their contract which allows the devil to kill the man at his request. The man nods and suffers a heart attack.

Opening Narration:

"You're about to meet a hypochondriac. Witness Mr. Walter Bedeker, age forty-four, afraid of the following: death, disease, other people, germs, draft, and everything else. He has one interest in life, and that's Walter Bedeker. One preoccupation: the life and well-being of Walter Bedeker. One abiding concern about society: that if Walter Bedeker should die, how will it survive without him?"

Closing Narration:

"There's a saying, 'Every man is put on Earth condemned to die, time and method of execution unknown.' Perhaps this is as it should be. Case in point: Walter Bedeker, lately deceased, a little man with such a yen to live. Beaten by the Devil, by his own boredom, and by the scheme of things in this, the Twilight Zone."
